Dunjee School – After Fire

Dunjee School – After Fire

Jan 3, 2012

Dunjee All-School-Association or Dunjee Negro School System began in 1947. The area was known as Green Pastures at this time and had an elementary school, middle school, high school and a large field house shared by all three schools. The residents of the Dunjee area had long suffered at the hand of segregation in Oklahoma. Before 1963 it was part of the Choctaw...

Tulsa Club Building

Tulsa Club Building

Jan 1, 2011

This eleven-story building was designed by Bruce Goff. It was built through the joint effort of the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce and the Tulsa Club.  The club, which was founded in 1925, was the place to be for businessmen to make deals at lunchtime and show off their wealth at evening dinners. The building has 11 floors, which were dedicated to giant dining...

Hissom Memorial Center REVISITED

Hissom Memorial Center REVISITED

Oct 20, 2010

In the post-war era, Oklahoma had a significant number of children diagnosed with mental disabilities requiring institutionalization, but the two schools operated by state mental health officials at Enid and Pauls Valley had become antiquated and overcrowded and dated back almost to statehood. Providing modern care for these children became a priority for...

Haunted Heartland

Haunted Heartland

Oct 1, 2010

October is “Haunted Heartland” month at Abandoned Oklahoma. With Halloween approaching fast, we figured why not do something special. So, during the month of October, we will be featuring the scariest places in Oklahoma. We are not ghost hunters, and don’t have any special equipment, but some of the places we have been do come off as pretty...

Guthrie Homestead

Guthrie Homestead

Oct 1, 2009

Definitely a creepy place. I couldn’t find any history on the location, but it sits right off I-35 in Guthrie. If you look at pic #66, you will see a vulture or other large bird that had made the top floor his home. The door behind the bird was only accessible through that room, and we couldn’t get past the bird.

Elgin, Ks.

Elgin, Ks.

Sep 24, 2009

Although Elgin may not qualify as an Oklahoma ghost town it might be just close enough. Elgin sits right on the Oklahoma & Kansas state line. Just a quick jog off of Hwy 99 north & you will find your self in a deserted pocket of a once bustling town. Elgin is a piece of American history that has slipped away with time. The weathered and broken buildings...

Optima Lake State Park

Optima Lake State Park

Sep 23, 2009

To begin the story of Optima Lake, I would like to give a little background. I saw a story on News 9, which can be read here stating the park would be torn down instead of replacing a $1.5 Million guardrail that protects drivers crossing the dam. So we decided to hit the road, and document the park before it was lost forever. Optima Lake is located in the...

Fallis Homestead

Fallis Homestead

Sep 23, 2009

While visiting Fallis for the second time during our Ghost Town feature, I stumbled upon this home right outside town. The sun was setting, and the only sounds were of a nearby oil wells gears creeking as it pumped. Upon entering the back door, I immediately felt scared and unsafe. I have been into many locations that are rumored to have ghosts or hauntings, but...

Santa Fe Depot – Ponca City

Santa Fe Depot – Ponca City

Sep 20, 2009

When Ponca City’s final depot was built in 1911, it was reportedly similar to the brick county seat depots built elsewhere across the system. The depot was extensively remodeled in 1945 with a stucco exterior and various other modifications. The former Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway train station sits beside the mainline running through town, which...

Tee Pee Drive-IN

Sep 18, 2009

Located along historic Route 66, The Teepee Drive-In was built on the outskirts of Tulsa in 1950 with a capacity of 400 cars. Over its 50 years it has passed through numerous owners. The current owner tried to make a go of it in 1998 and 1999 but didn’t succeed. It did not re-open for the 2000 season. The current owner is looking for a person to take...

Built in 1910 by brothers Charles and George Duncan, the Duncan Hotel was the site of many social and civic events. John Marshall High School

Aug 21, 2009

John Marshall opened in early 1950 to serve the need for a high school in the ever-growing suburbs in far north Oklahoma City. In comparison to other high schools built by the OKCPS at this time it was considered the best. It features 2 gyms, tennis courts, football fields, and an auditorium. It thrived well into the 1970′s until the surrounding area began...

St. Vincent’s Home

Aug 2, 2009

St. Vincent’s Home was operated by the Brothers of Mercy and was built in 1945. The nursing order of Catholic brothers moved to the present location and built the ‘old’ section of the building in 1953. The addition was built using a grant from Hill-Burton. St. Vincent’s takes male patients only. In 1957, patients ranged from a 7 year old...
