Center for Design Arts

The Center for Design Arts lived as The First Church of Christ-Scientist until 1988.

The Oklahoma City Foundation for Architecture sold it after eight years of working to preserve it but failing to transform it into the Centre for Design Arts , for which the foundation was trying to raise $1.1 million. The center was envisioned as a home for professional organizations associated with architecture and design. Even though it still hasn’t reopened, the building has been saved from demolition which was the groups main goal. As part of an agreement, the building cannot be demolished for 35 years.

The building – with a 1,000-square-foot foyer and 4,000 square feet of additional open space on the ground level, with a 5,000-square-foot sanctuary above – was put on the National Register of Historic Places on Sept. 9, 2001.

The First Church of Christ-Scientist building was constructed in 1922. After it was vacated by the church in 1988, it had a quick succession of several owners. The American Institute of Architects Central Oklahoma Chapter formed the Oklahoma City Foundation for Architecture in 1999 to buy the building, promote awareness of architecture in the community and save the building from an uncertain future.

California investors bought the historic, 85-year-old Classical Revival-style building in 2007 for $475,000.

    great layout of this video!!

I find it astonishing that such a beautiful, architecturally historic building is just standing empty and unused. I mean, this place is just begging for adapted reuse: a school, a museum, gallery spaces, etc. The mind boggles! Do you know who the current owners are at present? Thanks for this fascinating glimpse.
