This building is heavily guarded by the Guthrie police, unless you have permission to be there;you will be asked to leave. This building is used by the OKCPRG,they have cameras in there and a website.

I am English, and researching Oklahoma. This is all so interesting. I'm writing a book and if anyone can give me some information on, not only this hospital, but how the surrounding countryside looked between 1964-1978/80 I'd be so grateful. Mainly interested in whether this place stands miles from anywhere -how far to a main town etc. What are the houses like around these parts = are they mainly farm houses etc. In fact anything at all, I would be grateful for the info. I have travelled most parts of the U.S. but never, sadly been to Oklahoma. Thanks so much.

LOL, born here 1969. Never knew that abt Karen Silkwood. Wow. In October 1983 I was here when the bldg was used to house foster kids who were between placements or some such. I had loaned my science folder to a friend who was taken out of her home over the weekend, and somehow my mom found out where they took her. At that time, if I recall correctly, only the far south west wing was being occupied, but not the rest of the place. Interesting stories and links. Thanks for sharing.

I hate when they shut down old buildings and say they are to old to be runed. Then they just sit there and rote and fall apart when they were fine to begen with. I know a hospital called Dorthia Dix Hospital in NC. They shut it down because it was to old and it is older than this hospital and it looks in great shape. Have no idea why they closed it down. They are thinking about demolishing the hospital and turning it into a park. This hosptal is 151 years old and shut down a few months ago. And it is in perfect condition. Please comment..... Danny.

Oh yes, I remember reading about Karen Silkwood..she was coming to OKC, at the time a Holiday Inn, on NW 39 near Portland..she never made it. The lady knew to much information...I wish I had known that when I was there! Thanks for sharing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Silkwood On the night of the car crash, she was driving alone to Oklahoma City to meet David Burnham, a reporter for The New York Times, to tell her story. Meryl Streep played Silkwood in the movie.

Growing up in the Oklahoma City area, I have been to Guthrie many times. About two years ago, after buying a new camera, I suggested to my boyfriend that we should go over to Guthrie to try out my new camera. There are so many old buildings there, I thought it would be a great place to take pictures. I had always heard about the old abandoned hopsital, and after finding it, we got out of the car and started walking around the building. This was on a Sunday around 2 p.m. I took a couple of rolls of film that day, and after getting home and having the film developed, I was anxious to see how my camera worked. While looking through the pictures, my boyfriend stopped and said, "Wait, look at this". In one of the pictures, there is a woman with a white, ruffled hat standing in one of the windows. You can see her face and her dress, as well. I couldn't believe it. She appeared on the third floor. It is so strange to have something show up in a photograph when you know you didn't see it at the time it was taken. Anyways, I wish I could post it here. It is an incredible picture!
