The first Washington elementary school was built in 1907 at a total cost of $12,000. The original building burned down and was replaced in 1930 with a $60,000 building at Third and Seminole. A 1952 addition of an all-purpose room and classroom cost $73,727.
The last classes were held at this school in May 1978.

The building housed the state Regional Educational Services Center for many years, but that program now leases space at the old McKinley grade school.

The building also once housed indoor batting cages, etc. for the district baseball program. Washington School was sold to Restoring Life Ministries in March 1998 for $8,000.
The property was then sold by that ministry on 2/1/2006 for $30,000 to
private owners.

Glad to see this post up!
I do believe we did well on this one.
That Barney picture and Goliath mask picture still sort kinda maybe creep me out.
Awesome. I love pic 101, you just dont see detail and style like that anymore…
Wasn’t there also a Lincoln Elementary on the West side of town? I remember going to a school to play basketball on the playground with my dad and I thought it was called Lincoln, but it looked a lot like this (in my memory anyway). I don’t remember Lincoln being a school when I was older, so it may have gone away when they eliminated several schools in the 70’s and 80’s like Highland Park and Limestone.
Yes! there is a Lincoln, it is still standing & in good shape. It has been occupied by some business (I don’t recall the name) for over 20 yrs now. There is also Douglass is has always been occupied by the ARC as far back as I remember. It is very close to Washington. Those 3 original schools are the only ones left on the west side with exception of the still active & renovated Jane Phillips.
Wow
I drive by there all the time.
I never even knew what it was… and have lived here 52 years!
